Shannon Hastings

Seven years ago, Shannon Hastings moved to the Destin area as a full-time resident. She asked advice from a good friend on what she might do to stay active and to give back to her community.  Shortly after, she began teaching at Studio 237 Music School located in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Shannon says, “It’s one of the best decisions I have ever made.” In the late 1960’s, she earned her degree in music piano and voice from the University of Alabama. Since then, she has lead music in churches, chorus, taught in the Alabama School System, and privately. Her students receive the extra benefit of live accompaniment during lessons. Why does Shannon love to teach piano and voice?  Shannon replied “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student whose life you have touched in a positive way.” Students grow in their gifting and develop confidence, poise, and ability. It is every teacher’s joy to help a student achieve their goals and blossom musically and personally.

“I see the bigger picture of young adults who are developing who they are as people. Teaching is about being a mentor before you teach your subject. I love being a mentor.” Students are encouraged to discover themselves as they discover music. Preparation to perform at each lesson is a great personal endeavor, such as: organizing books, scheduling practice time, overcoming feelings, fears, and perceptions. Shannon mentors her students to overcome these hurdles even before the first note is played or sung. “I can celebrate my students’ accomplishments and provide them with what they need to enjoy music now and beyond the years they will spend with me.” Teachers are your biggest cheerleader! Each student is individual with different needs. Shannon is great at discovering one’s giftings and needs, helping them develop fine performance abilities in the now and beyond. She carefully prepares for her student’s lessons. “I’m able to help my students recognize beauty and be sensitive. I teach not just to learn how to play or sing, but so a student will have more love, more compassion, more good experiences…and in short, more life!”
