GAINESVILLE — A Gainesville man was arrested Sunday after police say he choked, attempted to smother, and stabbed a woman at least 20 times.

Police say Kelvin Laray Grigger, 28, and the woman were together in their bedroom lying in bed. The woman told police Grigger had smoked Molly, a drug, and was “freaking out.”

The Gainesville Police Department report says Grigger grabbed the woman by the throat and choked her, which made her unable to breathe for about five seconds. The woman’s brother pulled Grigger off the woman, the report says.

The woman’s mother, who is listed as a witness, talked to Grigger about the choking and took them both to get something to eat. The woman’s mother believed Grigger was on narcotics.

After the trip to get food, she dropped them both off back at their home and believed everything had been resolved.

After returning inside, the woman laid down on the couch and woke to Grigger attempting to smother her with a shirt and stabbing her with a small pocketknife, police say.

The woman attempted to fight off Grigger but was unsuccessful. Police say he hit her repeatedly with one fist while stabbing her with his other hand.

The woman told police that during the attack, Grigger said “You’re going to die before I die!”

The woman blacked out and when she regained consciousness, Grigger was no longer there.

The woman was bloody and had puncture wounds on her face, scalp, neck, arms, shoulder and chest, police said. She was treated by UF Health Shands Hospital and a physician confirmed she had at least 20 cuts and puncture wounds.

Police say after the attack, Grigger contacted the woman’s mother and told her “I (Expletive) her up.”

Grigger also called the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office emergency call center and told the call taker that he needed to be contained and that he was a danger to the community.

Grigger was charged with attempted murder and battery by strangulation. He was held in the Alachua County jail Monday morning, and bond was set at $225,000.
