Blaze erupted in a room at a multi-family motel complex located at 353 West James Lee Boulevard.

CRESTVIEW — A child was severely burned in a fire early Saturday morning at a multi-family motel complex located at 353 West James Lee Boulevard.

According to a press release from the Crestview Fire Department, multiple units arrived on scene at the complex at approximately 12:08 a.m. to find heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of Room 129 at the Hilton Motel. It took personnel approximately 20 minutes, according to the release, to contain and extinguish the fire. Major damage to the remainder of the motel complex was prevented.

A family with several children lived in the room where the fire originated. While all members were able to escape the blaze, Crestview FD reported that one child suffered significant burn injuries and was transported by Okaloosa County EMS ambulance to North Okaloosa Medical Center. The release noted that the status of the child and extent of the burn injuries were unknown as of Saturday afternoon.

According to the release, there were no other injuries reported and none of the emergency personnel on scene sustained injuries while extinguishing the fire.

Crestview FD reported that fire damage was limited to the room of the fire’s origin. Smoke damage, however, was evident in the connecting rooms on both sides of where the fire originated.

Room 129 and all its contents were a total loss. The release noted that the American Red Cross has been notified to assist the families that have been displaced due to the fire. A 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer was parked directly in front of the room where the fire originated and was approximately five feet from the building. The vehicle also sustained significant fire damage and is considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and is currently being investigated by the Bureau of Fire Arson and Investigations. Other first responder organizations that responded to the fire included Duke Field Fire, Okaloosa County Emergency Medical Services and Crestview Police Department.
