The month of May will be bustling in Walton County School District with the State Assessment schedule, special senior activities, awards ceremonies, art shows, music concerts, drama performances, field trips and yearbook signings! We encourage parents to make sure students are conscientious about school attendance during these last few weeks, and that they are physically and emotionally ready for the rigorous testing season. The District window for testing is May 1st through the 29th, with specific assessments scheduled:

May 1, 2 = Grades 4-6 Reading

May 7-8  = Grades 3-6 Mathematics

May 9     = Grades 5 and 9 NGSSS Statewide Science

Also scheduled May 1-29

Grades 7-10 FSA ELA Reading

Grades 7 and 8 FSA Mathematics

FSA Algebra 1 and Geometry EOC’s

NGSSS Biology 1, Civics, and U.S. History EOC

A reminder that Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day, and all students and staff in the district are off for the holiday. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, May 28th. The last day for students, and end of the 4th 9 Weeks/2nd Semester is May 29th. Teachers will be in school on May 30th for a Teacher Workday/Professional Development Day.

Congratulations to the Walton County Academic Team for placing 2nd in the state at the Orlando Commissioner’s Academic Challenge in April!  We are so incredibly proud of their dedication, commitment to preparation, and performance at this event. They collaborated as a team in the competition, built on each other’s strengths, and represented WCSD in EPIC2 fashion, which are prime examples of the Walton County Way!

We are proud to announce that Mrs. Joan Kennett, science teacher at South Walton High School and 2018 Walton County Teacher of the Year, has been identified by the Florida Department of Education as a Science Leader in the state, and invited to participate as a facilitator at the 2019 Summer Science STEMposium. Superintendent Hughes shared that Mrs. Kennett’s “input, collaboration and support of teachers has been exceptional!” We look forward to the knowledge that Mrs. Kennett will bring to the STEM education programs in Walton County School District, and know she will represent us well!

Graduation is quickly approaching, and summer is near for all our students! The following are Graduation dates starting at 7pm:

May 17, 2019 Paxton High School

May 18, 2019 Freeport High School

May 20, 2019 Walton High School

May 21, 2019 South Walton High School

May 23, 2019 In10sity Magnet School

Many of our seniors will be making plans to begin the next phase of their education at the college and career level, and others will be impacting our community in the workforce. Superintendent Hughes shared in his State of the Schools report in April that our graduation rate has increased from 82% in 2017 to 87% in 2018, and we are anticipating an even greater increase for 2019.  Our administrators, teachers and students are continuing to strive for diligence and rigor in the pursuit of academic success as we close out the 2018-2019 school year.
