Witches of South Walton Have Something Brewing
The Witches of South Walton — an organization devoted to assisting the Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) — will host their 13th annual Witch Ride down Scenic Highway 30-A on Monday, October 31, 2016, at 6:30 a.m. Last year, nearly 240 Witches participated in the event and raised over $6,200 for Children’s Volunteer Health Network. Here are a few of the event’s highlights: The Witches Brew When: Thursday, October 27 Where: La Playa at Gulf Place Pre-registered packet pickup and in-person registration at La Playa in Gulf Place from 5 – 8 p.m. Drink specials will be offered for all participants and Forrest Williams Band will play live. Raffle tickets will be sold only at Witches Brew to win a Custom Designed Witch Hat. The participants must be present to win at 8 p.m. Halloween Masquerade Party When: Saturday, October 29 Where: Trebeaché at Red Fish Village Trebeaché and Grayton Beach Catering are hosting the Halloween Masquerade Party with 10% of the ticket sales being donated to Children’s Volunteer Health Network in the name of the Witches of South Walton. The event will feature music by Randall Bramblett Band, The Steenos with Franko Washboard Jackson. There is also a costume contest with prizes for 1st, 2nd& 3rd places. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $50.00 or at the door for $60.00. Wake-Up Witches! When: Monday, October 31 Where: The Green at Gulf Place Paris Janos will be on the Green at Gulf Place reporting live for News Channel 7 from 5 – 7 a.m. 30A Radio will also cover the event again this year. All witches are encouraged get up early to be seen on T.V. 13th Annual Witch Ride When: Monday, October 31 Where: The Green at Gulf Place Information and final announcements will be made at 6:30 a.m. At this time all Witches must be with their bike prepared to ride. The charity bike ride starts at 7 a.m. sharp where all Witches will promptly leave Gulf Place as a group. Resting Stop The Witches ride to Stinky’s Fish Camp and Bait Shack to line up on 30A and greet spectators. Stinky’s will provide FREE water and $3.00 Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s and a special Witches Brew. Gathering Brunch When: Monday, October 31 Where: La Playa at Gulf Place The Witches ride back to Gulf Place at 8:30 a.m. to enjoy the Gathering Brunch, contests, and raffle ticket drawings on the patio at LaPlaya. The Gathering Brunch includes a selection of pastries, fruit, bacon and eggs accompanied with Mimosas (limited to 3) and a cash bar. $50 prizes will be given to the Witch with the ‘Best Decorated Bike’, ‘Best Witch Costume’ and ‘Best Witch Cackle’. The Taylor Haugen Foundation will hold their seventh annual Savor The Season fundraiser on Thursday, November 3, 2016. This culinary experience has grown to become one of the most popular events on 30A and benefits the foundation’s efforts to make sports safer for middle- and high-school-aged athletes. Situated around the Caliza Pool at Alys Beach, Savor The Season features twelve of the area’s finest chefs who showcase their culinary talents with signature dishes. Each signature dish is paired with a fine wine or craft beer. The evening culminates with an exciting live auction and entertainment provided by national recording artist Michael J. Thomas. Our new 30A Wines will also be featured at the event. The participating restaurants include Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood, Caliza Restaurant, Restaurant Paradis, Nola Boiling Company, Bake My Day Destin, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, CHL Signature Catering of 30A, Culinary Catering 365, Stinky’s Fish Camp, and George’s at Alys Beach. The Taylor Haugen Foundation was created to honor the memory of the 15-year-old Niceville High School student who passed away after an injury sustained during a football game on August 30, 2008. Proceeds from Savor The Season help support the Taylor Haugen Foundation’s YESS (Youth Equipment for Sports Safety) Program. The primary goal of the YESS Program is to reduce the number of sports-related abdominal injuries in middle and high school athletes. Working directly with school administrators, the THF Board of Directors actively participate in a variety of meetings and activities to present the benefits of wearing sports safety equipment. Through collaboration with vendors, the YESS program provides interested middle and high school athletic teams with matching grants to purchase state -of-the-art safety equipment. 30A 10K Aims to Help with Fire Prevention
The 30A 10K & 1 Mile Fun Run is raising funds this year to save lives and property in South Walton County. Nearly $2.4 million in property damages occurred last year due to fires in South Walton. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher could help save lives and property, but far too few people know how to use them. This year, the 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day race in Rosemary Beach is looking to help change that. The race is raising funds to purchase a state-of-the-art fire extinguisher training system for the South Walton Fire District. This new system will vastly expand the number of people the fire district can teach to use fire extinguishers. It will allow the fire district to conduct a training for any business, health care or child care facility or community group in South Walton. “By having fire extinguisher knowledge, anyone can potentially stop a small fire from spreading into a large fire,” said Fire Marshall Sammy Sanchez. “This can reduce loss of life, property damages and certainly reduces loss of business income.” The South Walton Fire District provided fire extinguisher training to more than 2,000 workers in South Walton last year. But one of their biggest obstacles to training more people is that their current system must be used outside and is contingent on weather conditions. Sanchez discovered a better solution and with the help of funds raised through the 30A 10K the district will soon be able to train many more people and potentially save more lives. The “Bulls Eye” Laser-Driven Fire Extinguisher Training System allows the Fire District to train the public in any location, indoors or out, quickly and without a mess. The system electronically simulates the sight and sounds of a real fire and allows trainees to use a “laser” fire extinguisher to practice putting out the fire. The LED flames and laser extinguisher are easy to set up, clean up and use repeatedly for practice. After a training session, participants can see their accuracy and response time. “Fire has no boundaries, fire is not racist, fire does not care how much money you have or don’t have. Fire destroys everything it reaches,” Sanzhez said. “Our job is to stop fires before they happen. If that cannot be accomplished, then at the very least, we can limit the dangers and the damages by arming our customers with fire extinguisher knowledge and know how. This is the sole reason this fire extinguisher system is important to South Walton Fire District and all of our customers that we serve.” The 30A 10K & 1 Mile Fun Run is a 501c3 event held on Thanksgiving Day in Rosemary Beach. The mission of the event is to raise funds for local charities. This year, in addition to the South Walton Fire District, the race is raising money to support Anchorage Children’s Home, The Walton County Sheriff’s Department’s Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Northwest Florida Guardian ad Litem Foundation.
