Folks hoping to catch a glimpse of snow during this ongoing cold snap better plan on staying up late.

The best chance of a “wintry mix” drifting down on this part of the world is late tonight or early Saturday morning.

“Could there be some snowflakes mixed into the rain? That’s a possibility,” said Jason Beaman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mobile. “Not everyone is going to see it.”

The likelihood increases as you get farther from the coast. Areas north of Interstate 10 will also see colder temperatures.

But there will certainly be enough cold weather to go around.

“The miserable weather is a lock at this point,” Beaman said. “It’s in the low 40s and there’s rain that will continue on and off through the day.”

 The rain will come to an end in the early morning hours and a freeze warning has been issued for Saturday morning. Not everyone will see temperatures that dip below 32, but it will “still feel really chilly,” Beaman said.

It will be even colder Saturday night and colder than normal temperatures will continue through the weekend.

Waiting for the cold weather to pass before you get out and about? Plan on staying inside for a while. Although temperatures next week will reach the upper 50s or lower 60s, it will still be chillier than normal for the next week.

Cold night shelters will be open across the panhandle.

A cold night shelter will be open at Ferris Hill Baptist Church, 6848 Chaffin Street in Milton from Saturday night through Wednesday. Those who would like to stay at the shelter must arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. No one will be admitted after 8:30 p.m. unless brought in by law enforcement. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.

No one will be admitted to the shelter who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, unable to walk unaided or disoriented.

The cold weather is also triggering the opening of One Hopeful Place in Fort Walton Beach as a cold night shelter. It opens tonight at 5 p.m.

Walton County Emergency Management has activated its Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Plan for Walton County. A cold weather emergency shelter will open beginning tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the DeFuniak Springs Community Center, 361 North 10th Street in DeFuniak Springs.
