It was a foot-stomping, knee-slapping old-fashioned hillbilly Tuesday morning as Dennis “Moonshine” Rader introduced his unique performance style to the appreciative Destin snowbirds. The laughter was second only to the thunderous applause as he received a standing ovation. If you missed him or would just like to enjoy more of him, he will be performing at the Destin Community Center Sunday evening, Jan. 21. Tickets are just $10 at the door.
Next Tuesday the snowbirds will welcome longtime favorites Jabbo and Krissa to the roost. Jabbo is a well-known headliner at many Destin nightspots, especially the Cabana Café in Miramar Beach. Krissa adds softness, charm and an amazing voice to make this duo an experience too good to miss.
Rumor has it that residents of the Seascape resort reported a strange booming noise coming from the area of the golf course. It was, they discovered, just the first T.G.I.T. (Thank Goodness It’s Tuesday) party in the Seascape conference center. Bobby D’s music kept the chairs empty and the dance floor packed as his renditions of oldies but goodies filled the room. Line dances were a favorite but there were plenty of opportunities to shake-it-up and to dance cheek-to-cheek. The party ended with a huge circle dance where individuals braved the center of the circle to bust a move, or, perhaps a muscle or joint. The next T.G.I.T. party will be Tuesday, Jan. 30, same place and time with Todd Herendeen entertaining.
None of the Destin Snowbird activities start before the crack of dawn, except Ken Yee’s weekly casino trips. Printed on the tickets is a 6 a.m. departure time. The bus usually arrives at The Track about 5 a.m., and leaves as soon as everyone is on board. These eager beavers are often well on their way to Biloxi by 5:30 a.m.
Speaking of activities, you may want to take note of the following: The Singles Friendship Club will meet at Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer at 210 Harbor Blvd. in Destin on Tuesday, immediately following the 11 a.m. meeting. Euchre players are invited to stop into Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill at 4251 Legendary Drive in Destin on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information, Chairman Terry Doherty’s contact information can be found on the activity sheet or on the website at www.destinsnowbirds.org.
Uncle Buck’s is also where non-league snowbird bowlers can enjoy an hour of bowling for the half-hour rate every Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m.
You must be a registered snowbird to participate in the many activities offered, but it is never too late to join. Registrations take place every Tuesday morning before the general meetings: 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. before the 8:30 a.m. meeting and 10 to 10:45 a.m. before the 11 a.m. meeting through mid-February. Once registered you will realize that, regardless what the temperature is, the real warmth of Florida is in the friendly people you meet.
