Well, it has been a rough start to the 2018 season but the Snowbirds of Fort Walton Beach are not to be deterred: We have registered in record numbers, closing in on 600, and have begun to enjoy the hospitality and beauty of the Emerald Coast.
The first social of the year was held at the Crab Trap on The Boardwalk, and nearly 150 members enjoyed sharing stories of home along with good food and lots of cheering for their favorite NFL team on the big screen during the playoffs. Prior to that, many of the snowbirds attended the Winter Guest Fest at the Emerald Coast Convention Center and were treated to tasty samples along with important information and lots of “stuff” to fill their ResortQuest bags.
Registration continues only on Tuesdays between 10 a.m and noon at the Rec Center on Jett Drive. The first casino bus trip, set up by Will Baker, was a successful venture, (for some players) on Jan 18., and many of the club activities have begun with winners already submitted by the activity leaders — Barbara Kinnaird for bridge, Jim Rynbrant for cribbage and Bill and Pam Kennedy for euchre reporting the following winners: bridge — Dan Ryan with 4,600, Sue Hurle with 4,590 and Marilyn Pals with a 4,250; cribbage — Pam Kennedy with 605, Nancy DeBruin with 600 and Debbi Garrett with 595; euchre — Jan Delaney with 67, Bob McDonell with 66 and Roy Miller with a 62.
The Par Three golf league at the Gold Gardens in Destin, set up by Larry Proper, got off to a warm, (depending on your perspective) start with 31 golfers playing this year. Winners for the first week were: Low score for the men John Bohannon shot a 31; for the ladies Sheena Baker led the way with a 34. Contest winners on the course for the ladies were: Georgia Panosh and Betty Thaldorf, and for the men Larry Proper and John Van Duesen led the way.
