CRESTVIEW — More details were released Monday after a body was found in the Crestview woods on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Crestview Police Department, authorities are investigating the death of 60-year-old George M. Fanning of Crestview, whose body was found in a wooded area near the westbound Interstate 10 exit at State Road 85.
The death is not considered suspicious.
CPD received a call at 12:08 p.m. Sunday afternoon from a man who reported that while walking his dog, the animal led him to a tent in the woods near Walmart and the GameStop store. There he found the victim, whom he believed appeared to have been dead for some time.
A crime scene was established as a precaution while police investigated the area, but nothing suspicious was found. The state medical examiner was notified shortly after police arrived on the scene and took possession of the deceased. The cause of death is pending autopsy.
According to the CPD, the woods between the businesses and the interstate are known to police to be popular camping places for homeless people and transients passing through the area.
The scene was cleared after the investigation at 4:10 p.m. Traffic on the interstate, S.R. 85 or around neighborhood businesses was not affected during the investigation.
