Niceville may be living up to its namesake, according to a National Council for Home Safety study of violent crime that was recently released by Alarm.org.

According to the study, which looks at the number of violent and property crimes per 1,000 occupants, Niceville is No. 22 on the list of the 100 safest cities in Florida.

Niceville averaged 21 reported violent crimes and 257 property crimes, according to the survey.

Violent crimes include aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery. Property crimes included burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. Violent crimes were weighted more heavily than property crimes, according to the survey.

Niceville had the highest ranking of any city in Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties. Cities with a population below 10,000 were not ranked.

Fort Walton Beach made an appearance on the list at No. 61. The survey indicated that Fort Walton Beach averaged 67 violent crimes and 611 property crimes per 1,000 occupants.

Crestview slid into the No. 98 slot, averaging 121 incidents of violent crime and 897 incidents of property crime.

They were the only local cities on the list. Panama City, Panama City Beach and Pensacola were missing.
