WORDMASTERS Showcase at The REP Theatre
The REP Theatre in Seaside welcomes playwright Donald Carroll and awarded author J. C. Hallman to center stage on Friday, January 25th at 7:30pm for an engaging literary evening of script readings, tales of world travel, historic archives and awarded writing. Carroll and Hallman are two distinguished writers of Seaside’s Escape To Create Arts Residency. Now in its 27th season, the multi-disciplinary “E2C” has hosted many prominent writers whose works have been recognized by our country’s top literary prizes.
During the thirty years Donald Carroll has lived and worked as an attorney in Rome he has been actively involved in the Anglo-American theatre community as actor, director and playwright. His full-length play, If Lear Had A Lawyer, enjoyed its premier run with the English Theatre of Rome in late 2017. Carroll developed the role of the Fool as a newly minted lawyer wrestling with timeless questions of whether the rule of law is always just, whether power must corrupt and whether blind love can always be true. The playwright will screen video of the Rome production and actors of The REP will read portions of the script.
J.C. Hallman of Brooklyn, NY is the author of several works of nonfiction that combine memoir, history, journalism, and travelogue. Hall’s numerous honors include a Pushcart Prize, a James Michener Fellowship and a Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Hallman will share research and archival photos collected on his journey to solve the mystery at the core of his forthcoming book, The Anarcha Quest: The Story of a Slave and a Surgeon, the compelling story of the forgotten young slave woman whose surgery changed medical history.
