TRAFFIC STOPS LEAD TO THE SEIZURE OF OVER 60 GRAMS OF FENTANYL AND HEROIN

TRAFFIC STOPS LEAD TO THE SEIZURE OF OVER 60 GRAMS OF FENTANYL AND HEROIN Posted on October 13, 2022 Over 60 grams of fentanyl and heroin are taken off the streets following two separate traffic stops by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. On September 21st, Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies and VICE/Narcotics investigators conducted a traffic stop on a white sedan near the intersection of Persimmon Street and Cedar Avenue in Choctaw Beach. During the traffic stop, the driver, Jonathon Scott Hataway, 28, was found to be in possession of 27 grams of marijuana and 57 grams of fentanyl. Two weeks later, on October 8th, deputies pulled over another white sedan near the intersection of US Highway 98 West and Old Blue Mountain Road. The driver of the vehicle, Michael Wayne Hand, 53, was found to be in possession of four small bags of a powdery substance, which he later told deputies was heroin. Both men were subsequently arrested and transported to the Walton County Jail. Hataway is facing two felony drug charges: trafficking in fentanyl and possession of marijuana over 20 grams. He was released on a $50,000 bond. Hand was charged with possession of heroin with the intent to sell. He was released on a $15,000 bond.   https://waltonso.org/news/feed/ Read More

Things to do in Myakka River State Park in Sarasota

If you’re staying in a vacation rental in the Bradenton Beach, Sarasota, or Siesta Key area, don’t forget to add Myakka River State Park to your vacation to-do list. This massive park is home to literally thousands of alligators, all waiting for their close up—from a safe distance, of course. Myakka River State Park is 58 square miles large and combines prairies with wetlands and pinelands. Running through the park is the Myakka River, perfect for boating, kayaking and fishing. Myakka River State Park was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was one of eight state parks in Florida developed by the CCC. Previously, the land for the park was owned by Bertha Palmer, a businesswoman from Chicago who pursued cattle and pig ranching on the land. Fast forward to today, and one major draw for Myakka River State Park is the many, many alligators that call it home. When the weather is warm, you can see alligators swimming along in the river or sometimes sunning themselves not far from shore. Keep your distance, of course, and use the closeup function on your camera phone or a telephoto lens on a nice camera to snap some nice shots. During Sarasota’s busiest season, it’s not uncommon to find tourists speaking several different languages stopped in clumps to gaze at gators and snap pics to share with others.  Another great way to learn about the park is with its boat and tram rides. The boats will take... Read More

SWFD assists with Hurricane Ian relief

CREWS DEPLOY to help Hurricane Ian victims. (Photo courtesy of SWFD) From RUBY KEARCE  South Walton Fire District’s (SWFD) Board of Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday, Oct. 10, at SWFD headquarters. Rene Youell, attorney at law, informed the commissioners of a lawsuit brought to SWFD regarding an accident caused by an oil spill, claiming SWFD did not properly clean the area. Youell assured the commissioners of the insurance coverage for this particular issue and stated that the matter is in the insurance company’s hands. If details of the lawsuit need to be discussed further, there will be an executive meeting scheduled to do so. Youell went on to present her invoice for services during the month of September, which totaled $1,295.00, and a motion was passed to approve the invoice.  Carole Martin, Fiscal Officer, approached the board to explain that in previous years Warren Averett Accounting has presented the annual audit report at the SWFD Board of Commissioners’ January meeting. However, this year’s presentation has been postponed until March and the date has not yet been set.  Daniel LaTour, District Chief, then approached the board, starting with a resolution for surplus property. Among the equipment identified as obsolete and/or no longer useful were ATV’s, off road trucks, drones, lifeguard towers, and a typewriter. A motion was passed to declare the property as surplus and to dispose of, recycle, sell, or donate the items while reserving the right to turn down any and all bids.  LaTour then moved on... DFS Beautification and Tree Board addresses Baldwin Avenue Street Painting

Story by RUBY KEARCE  The DeFuniak Springs Beautification and Tree Board met at City Hall for its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 6. Board Chair Kim Wennerberg began by announcing updates about downtown DeFuniak Spring’s (DFS) street painting. The City Council has determined that the water and sewer pipes running down Baldwin Avenue will need to be replaced in the next few years. So, Wennerberg recommended that the council consider brick pavers in order to slow down traffic as well as suit the aesthetic of main street. The council agreed to look into the project.  The conversation then moved to the final recommendations for the Master Parks Plan in order to bring the finished product to the DFS City Council for official adoption. Members recommended including more language regarding security and vandalism, expanding the demographic to include members of the community living outside the city limits, more emphasis on landscaping and the overall interior design of the parks.  Tom Baker, the new president of the local chapter of Kiwanis Club, approached the board in order to discuss the possibility of partnering with the city to improve a city park. Baker would like to have the Kiwanis chapter make an impact on the community and hopes to attract new members in the process.  Wennerberg suggested having the Kiwanis sponsor Board Member Sommer Adams’ idea for an edible garden and help maintain it once the trees are planted. Wennerberg reached out to DFS Maintenance Superintendent Dewy Roberts about the best place for... Read More
