English – the (ONLY) Language for Florida Driver’s Exams
In Brief:
-
Florida driver’s license exams are now English-only, with no translation services available
-
The rule applies to all applicants, including non-citizens and visa holders
-
In Walton County, road tests are only offered in DeFuniak Springs
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced it will only administer the state’s driver’s license test in English.
The change took place on February 6 and means translation services will no longer be available for the knowledge and skills examinations.
Former Exam “Translator Component” Deleted
Mid Bay News contacted the Walton County Tax Collector’s Office and spoke with Chief Tax Collector Brian McBroom. The Tax Collector’s office acts as a kind of subcontractor for the state and provides driver services for motorists in Walton County.
McBroom confirmed that scheduled appointments made before the official announcement and system change were allowed to proceed under the prior language access, but now that the process is in place and the change is live, the process is unchanged. The Chief Tax Collector said the statewide testing modification appears to be going smoothly in Walton County. He reported, “No issues, no complaints.”
Mid Bay News asked about the impact on individuals entering the U.S. on a student visa (F-1 and M-1), B-1, and B-2 visas for business or tourism. Does the rule for English-only written driver’s tests apply to them as well? McBroom indicated that non-citizens can access a driver’s license for the duration of their U.S. Visa stay, provided they have all the necessary documentation. And yes, the change to English only exam applies to everyone. The driver’s license for those in Florida with a visa will only receive a license for the time that corresponds to the granted length of stay on their government-issued documentation (or visa, Employment Authorization Document (EAD). These special applicants for a Florida driver’s license would be required to take and successfully perform on the English knowledge and skills test administered by Driver’s License Services.
DeFuniak Springs Is the Only Location for the Road Driving Skills Test
Within Walton County, McBroom shared that there is only one location for the actual “road driving skills test “- and that is at the DeFuniak Springs location. This service is not available in South Walton or Freeport. Appointments for road tests can be made by calling 850-892-8121. McBroom encouraged citizens to access the Tax Collector’s website for quicker turnaround on renewing vehicle registration, Driver’s License Renewal, and getting a replacement license plate, among other services provided. The web address is: www.waltontaxcollector.com.
Mid Bay News asked the Chief Tax Collector if there was anything that would be helpful for citizens to be reminded of, and he mentioned the Real ID and the importance of having the updated driver’s license with the “gold star” that is in the top right corner of the driver’s license. In 2010, Florida became a Real ID state, which signifies the license holder has provided proof of legal presence in the United States and, therefore, proof of U.S. citizenship.
