Niceville Moves Quickly to Fill Head Coach Position

A sudden resignation has Niceville football scrambling, and the search for the next head coach is already underway.

Niceville Moves Quickly to Fill Head Coach Position

NICEVILLE, Fla. — Just days after the unexpected resignation of head football coach Richard Morgan, Niceville High School is already moving swiftly to find his replacement.

Principal Charlie Marello confirmed earlier this week that Morgan is no longer leading the Eagles after just one season at the helm. The team went 6-5 and exited the playoffs in the first round.

Now, with the offseason already underway and summer workouts approaching, school leadership says there’s no time to waste.

“The timeline is obviously tight, so we are moving on this immediately,” Marello said.

According to the school, the job will be posted during the week of March 30, with interviews and a final selection expected the week of April 6.

The quick turnaround reflects the urgency facing a program with high expectations and a long-standing tradition of success, and one now searching for its second head coach in as many years.

Despite the accelerated timeline, Marello emphasized that the hiring process will remain structured and inclusive.

“Per Okaloosa County School Board policy, a screening committee consisting of NHS faculty, school administrators, School Advisory Council members, and community representatives will review applications and participate in the interview process,” Marello said.

Morgan’s departure marked one of the shortest coaching tenures in recent program history, leaving the Eagles with limited time to regroup before preparations ramp up for the 2026 season.

School officials say the focus now is on finding the right leader to maintain continuity and uphold the program’s tradition as one of the Panhandle’s premier high school football programs.

What’s at Stake with the new coaching selection for Niceville?

The incoming coach will inherit a program with one of the most impressive resumes in Florida high school football, including a 25-year playoff streak that dates back to 2000.

The immediate focus for the new hire will be preparing the roster for a challenging 2026 schedule that features powerhouse opponents like Choctaw, Pace, Mosley, and Alabama’s top-ranked Hoover. Key returning underclassmen players, including running back Jakobe Gilyard and quarterback Deegan McCoy, are expected to be central to the transition.

The Top Local Contenders

The search to replace Richard Morgan is moving at a  quick pace. Given the tight timeline, the community and local insiders have already begun pointing toward a few logical candidates who understand the unique culture of Eagle football.

The Most Likely Candidate: Adron Robinson

If the goal is continuity and deep local roots, Adron Robinson is widely considered the leading candidate.

  • The Resume: He was a standout on Niceville’s 1988 State Championship team and has been a fixture on the Eagles’ sideline as an associate head coach for years.
  • The Logic: Robinson is currently the head coach for the NHS girls’ flag football team (which is currently dominant at 6-0). He is viewed as a “bridge” who can maintain the program’s culture while keeping the current roster intact during this sudden transition.
  • Community Support: City Councilman and QB Club President Heath Rominger has already publicly voiced support for Robinson, citing his “many years of service” and commitment to the kids.

The Internal “Rising Star”: Brooks Perry

An NHS alumnus and current faculty member, Brooks Perry represents the “next generation” of Eagle leadership.

  • The Resume: Perry played for Niceville before moving on to Florida State and FAU. He is already on campus, which is a major advantage given that the new coach needs to be in place by April 6.

The Wild Cards: Regional Coaches Niceville May Consider

Because Niceville is considered one of the premier jobs in Florida (and boasts one of the best stadium atmospheres in the state), Principal Marello’s phone is likely ringing off the hook. (For anyone younger than 30, phones used to be wired into your house and have a hook they rested on. Wild, I know.)

Outside chances that a coach like Phil Tisa, a Niceville Alum, or someone with recent success like Bay High School’s Jeremy Brown could get a look as well.

Coaches who’ve likely ‘opted-out’

Mosley Head Coach Tommy Joe Whiddon: Former Niceville assistant and son-in-law to past Niceville Coach John Hicks told Panama City News Herald Reporter Adebanji Bamedele last year that he has no interest in the job when it came open last year. He even said after the 2025 game against Niceville that the teams are no longer rivals, given the Dolphins’ record against them over the last five years. Don’t expect him to fly back to the Eagles nest any time soon (or ever)

South Walton Offensive Coordinator David Hedges: Coach Hedges, a former offensive coordinator at Niceville, just took a promotion on the sidelines at South Walton High School. He has already made several moves with his family around the country (including to Colorado and back to Florida) for football. It looks like his family is settled in SoWal and he will be there in the near term.

Next Steps for the Search:

The job is being advertised right now. By early next week, we should see the official list of applicants that the screening committee will review.
