Dr. Paul A. Petrey Jr., of Niceville, Florida, passed away peacefully at home with both children present. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his community, his country, and his family.
Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, Paul was the only child of a dentist and a schoolteacher. His upbringing shaped both his discipline and his lifelong commitment to serving others. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1954 with a degree in Chemistry and went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1958, “Roll Tide”.
Following his education, Dr. Petrey proudly served in the United States Navy as a dental officer before establishing his dental practice in Fort Walton Beach in 1961. For decades, he was a trusted and respected presence in the community, known not only for his skill but for the care and integrity he brought to his patients.
Dr. Petrey’s commitment to service extended far beyond his practice. He was elected to the Okaloosa County School Board three times and served a total of twelve years, never missing a single meeting, demonstrating his deep dedication to education and the future of his community. He also served ten years as Chief Dental Consultant at the Federal Prison Camp at Eglin Air Force Base.
A respected civic leader, Dr. Petrey served on the Board of Directors for the Okaloosa County Cancer and Heart Associations, the YMCA, the Speech and Hearing Center, and the First National Bank and Trust of Okaloosa County. He was also a past president of the Fort Walton Beach Rotary Club and remained actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and community development.
A man of strong faith, he was a longtime member and past vestryman of St. Simon’s-on-the-Sound Episcopal Church and later attended St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Niceville, Florida.
Dr. Petrey was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne, who passed away in 2023. He is survived by his children, Paul Petrey III and Patty King, his grandchildren, Stephanie Petrey, Paisley Petrey, and Ethan King, along with extended family and loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy.
He will also be missed by his wonderful friends, neighbors, and the staff of the local McDonald’s and Waffle House.
He was a proud man who always led by example and remained strong-willed until the very end.
There will be a Funeral Service held at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Niceville on Saturday, April 25th, from 11:00 to 12:00, with a lunch reception following from 12:00 to 1:00.
