PACE — The owner of a 5-year-old horse found shot to death early Wednesday morning is offering a reward to help locate the shooter.
Chevy, who lived in a pasture at the corner of Diamond and Jernigan roads in Pace, was shot three times, according to his owner, Beth Nelson.
The registered paint horse neighed when folks walked their dogs past him. Children on their way to a nearby bus stop made a habit of stopping to pet him.
“He loved human contact,” Nelson said. “Evidently he touched a lot of people’s hearts.”
Three .40-caliber casings were found in the road near the pasture, she said.
“I talked to the few neighbors who did hear gunshots and, around 2:40, it was pop, pop, pop,” she said. “I can’t understand why anybody would want to do that.”
She is offering reward of up to $1,200 for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot Chevy.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
