The Oct. 25 National Unity Day brought attention to bullying and how to prevent it. Several Walton District schools participated in activities.

The Walton High School Braves TV crew painted small rocks with messages of kindness. The crew hid the rocks throughout the school so that other students might find them as a means of brightening their day.

Walton Middle School students signed a banner, pledging to take a stand against bullying. Students wore orange to show support.

Freeport High School held a door decorating contest, with the following teachers and their students creating winning looks: Terrica Carlock, Rian Lyday and Vanessa Bump.

Sharon Mosley’s Maude Saunders Elementary School kindergarteners learned about standing up to bullies and sticking up for the victims through a story, “Spookley, the Square Pumpkin.”

In other Maude Saunders Elementary School news, the theme of “Teamwork Sparks Success” was put to use during the school’s literacy night in October. Each grade provided sports-themed games that taught literacy skills.

Seaside Neighborhood School Principal Kim Mixson engages the fifth- through eighth-grade students with a national program “the Amazing Shake,” which is designed to teach students manners, discipline, respect and professional conduct.

Late in September, students participated in a small-group interview session, with judges selecting students to advance to the next round. Carson Accola, John Akers, Annie Rose Allen, George Bailey, Scout Baughn, Sam Cooper, Kegley Hubbard, Meril Lagasse, Smith Reaves Sawyer Roberson, Lola Sennett, Sierra Smith, Matthew Storey and Reagan Wells will compete again in January.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Eglin Elementary School kindergarten through second-grade students took a tour of the Smoke House, designed to educate students about fire safety. The third- and fourth-grade students visited the Hazard Room.

The Eglin Air Force Base Fire Department helped in the lessons by presenting “Having two ways out.”

Southside Primary School serves as a collection point for new or clean and gently used coats of all sizes for the annual Coats for Kids drive, sponsored by the United Way of Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Donations can be made during school hours.
