A tractor-trailer driver that lost control at the scene of an accident on Interstate 10 struck and killed a construction worker Friday morning.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, Bobby Steed, 29, of Orlando, was approaching an accident scene at 10:23 a.m. at mile marker 46 in Okaloosa County at the time of the fatal crash.

FHP noted that Steed’s 2012 Freightliner semi was traveling west in the outside lane of the highway and that was where a construction crew was placing an arrow board on the outside north shoulder for the previous accident that had the lane blocked.

Steed failed to maintain control of the semi and began to slide on the wet pavement, according to the release. The Freightliner traveled out of the outside lane of travel and collided with the arrow board and struck two of the construction workers who were attempting to set it up.

One of the workers, 24-year-old Harley Wolfe-Davidson Schrank of Holt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other worker, 19-year-old Timothy Earl Smith of Pensacola, was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital for minor injuries and was later released.

FHP reported the crash remains under investigation.
