Car was struck on passenger side by pickup. Victim was partially ejected in crash.

CALLAWAY — An 18-year-old Rutherford High School student on a lunch break from school was killed in a two-vehicle wreck that shut down North Tyndall Parkway and Seventh Street for hours Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, at about 12:15 p.m., a white Ford Ranger pickup carrying two Rutherford students, ages 17 and 18, attempted to turn from Tyndall Parkway west onto Seventh Street, crossing into the path of a blue Dodge Charger traveling south on Tyndall Parkway. The Charger struck the truck on the passenger side, partially ejecting the passenger, who died from his injuries. Police radio transmissions from the time of the wreck indicated the truck had rolled on top of and pinned the victim, who had to be extricated.

Family members took the 17-year-old driver of the truck to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Charger, a 55-year-old male, was uninjured. No criminal charges have been filed as this time, according to BCSO.

Grief counselors were immediately made available at nearby Rutherford High School. The student has not yet been named, pending notification of his family.

“We were saddened today to hear of the loss of one of our students in a midday car accident,” Rutherford Principal Coy Pilson said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young man, and we are truly and deeply sorry to have lost him as a student, as a friend and as a Rutherford Ram.”
