FORT WALTON BEACH — Students at Silver Sands School presented a check to the Air Force Enlisted Village on Thursday after selling handmade notepads and gift tags to raise funds for their local community.
Scott Delveau, director of development for the Enlisted Village, and Magnolia Grill owner Tom Rice accepted the check from a room full of excited students.
“It’s not about the number of dollars they give us,” Rice said. “It’s a gift that comes from the heart. They’re learning to reach out into the community and do good things.”
In return, Delveau awarded each student with a gold coin. Rice also added two patriotic books to the children’s library and showed each of them the “grandmas and grandpas” they were helping to support.
The Air Force Enlisted Village is a nonprofit organization that provides homes for surviving spouses of retired enlisted U.S. Airmen.
Silver Sands School educates students who, because of their mental functioning levels, require services beyond those offered by other special education programs in regular schools, according to its website.
Silver Sands teacher Jana-Lou Mills said the children made such a profit from their notepads and gift tags that they were able to give to five charities this year.
“We get input from our kids about different things they want to give to,” Mills said. “The community has been so great about buying our products that we’re able to give to a fifth organization this year.”
