Boats, Fun and More at the Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show March 1-3

For some of us, it is inevitable. It happens every year around this time. It’s a cumulative effect. The sun sets later. Temperatures creeping up to feeling very Spring-like. And even though we don’t want to let our thoughts wander from our current task, we can’t help ourselves. We cannot ignore the symptoms of our ailment. We think about being on the water. We think about being on a boat. We think about being on our boat. We think, “I should just go ahead and buy that new boat!” We have a full-blown case of Boat Fever! And no amount of online browsing, video watching or magazine reading can alleviate our pain. We need to see boats in person. We need to climb up on them. We need to open hatches. We need to compare them side-by-side. We need to be around shiny new boats, and we need to be around a lot of them! Luckily for us, the Emerald Coast Boat and Lifestyle Show will soon be here, and it’s just what the doctor ordered! The annual show, which has become one of the can’t-miss events of the early Spring, returns to its’ picturesque home venue at Aaron Bessant Park, adjacent to Pier Park in Panama City Beach, March 1-3. Each year, the show features the top dealers representing the best brands of boats and personal watercraft, and this year is no different. There will be more marine dealers than ever at the show, drawing from all across the... Read More

The Origins of Gumbo + Seafood Gumbo Recipe

By Susan Benton, 30AEats.com New Orleans, a.k.a. the Crescent City, is a fascinating place known for diversity, culture, and its rich heritage. Put it all in a bowl to eat and enjoy, and you would have what is known as gumbo. Gumbo originated in Louisiana in the 18th century, but there is no evidence to pinpoint the exact origin of the food. Many believe as do I, that the name “gumbo” is derived from the word kingombo, which is Bantu for okra, a popular ingredient in West African cooking. The Choctaw Indians were found to have developed the spicy file’ powder, a key additive made from sassafras leaves; but the French lay claim to the thickening agent known as the roux. Gumbo is a full meal, a melting pot of rich flavors steeped in tradition, a comforting stew-like dish. Though I learned to make gumbo in high school, most locals to the state learn at the hands of their mothers and grandmothers at a young age. Gumbo can’t be rushed. So, if you don’t have the time or quality ingredients, don’t bother. It is crucial to use the freshest and best seasonal ingredients when cooking gumbo. So, selecting meat and/or shellfish, and vegetables, including the thickener (usually in the form of okra or file powder) must be done carefully. There are many variations of gumbo, and everyone thinks theirs is the best. But, I tend to stick to Chicken & Sausage or Seafood Gumbo, but I do use turkey after... Read More

Finding Mimmo: A Review of Mimmo’s 30A Ristorante Italiano

By Marta Rose-Thorpe I’ve been hearing great things about Mimmo’s 30A, and my husband Jimy and I were fortunate to dine there recently for our first time, although the establishment has been open just over a year. Nestled on 30A in Blue Mountain Beach, Mimmo’s was alive with vitality and people – yet felt somehow relaxed and laid back at the same time. Mimmo’s wife, Meghan Hall, is the décor guru behind this warm and beautiful “Old World” yet modern establishment. Next Level Cocktails General Manager Deni brought over aperitifs to get us started, and it was immediately apparent that Mimmo’s cocktails are Next-Level! An Espresso Martini arrived for me, chilled and frothy, made with St. Augustine Vodka, Borghetti Caffe Espresso Liqueur, and espresso. Smooth, sweet, and strong! Jimy ordered the Costa Nostra made with Mimmo’s Knob Creek, bitters, orange zest and smoked oak. Bursting with orange essence, a large, square ice cube filled the glass; a slice of orange rind was fastened to its side with a miniature clothespin. Two other Mimmo’s cocktail favorites are Death Rides a Horse (30A Reposado Agave, lime, squid ink agave, blood orange, and Calabrian Sea salt) and the Barberini (Malfy ‘Con Limone’ Gin, lavender, Old-Florida honey, and lemon). Mimmo’s has an extensive cocktail, wine and beer menu. We loved our server Dayna… so friendly, so sweet, and so knowledgeable. She brought fresh bread with dipping oil infused with basil, chives, spicy red peppers, and parmesan, and we could’ve made it an entire meal,... Read More

Kelly Plantation Street Called “Mattie’s Way” Legacy Lives on!

By Barbara Palmgren There’s a street in Kelly Plantation called “Mattie’s Way.” It was named after the late Mattie Kelly, whose Irish and southern roots strongly influenced a scenic subdivision with a championship golf course, equestrian center, nature-centered walkways and jogging trails that included a 225-acre nature preserve. Mattie Kelly owned the land and didn’t sell it until she found developers she trusted to plan the community in her name and with her vision.  Now called “The Masterpiece on the Bay” Life of Mattie Kelly Legacy & Dream Unfortunately, within the first few months of beginning the project, Mattie’s life was cut short at only 80 years of age. But her dream continued in 1992 with gracious homes, manicured lawns and community covenants to insure a picture-perfect postcard community. Kelly Plantation Golf Club, the crown jewel in the middle of stunning scenery and designer homes, was fashioned by Fred Couples and Gene Bates. In the early 19th century, the land was part of a large turpentine industry with towering pines along miles of waterfront and intricate bayous. Kelly Plantation Golf Club was built along miles of panoramic views of Choctawhatchee Bay with 7,000 yards of contoured greens, wide manicured fairways, hazards and sand traps. Kelly Plantation Clubhouse Amenities Beyond the golf course itself, the large clubhouse offers diverse menu options to be enjoyed in the clubhouse or on the covered veranda overlooking a beautiful lake with views of the 9th and 18th greens. I remember attending the Blount-Bowden Scholarship award event for local college... Read More
