New Golf Event April 27 to Forge Community Partnerships

By Douglas J. Bartels A long-standing sense of community drives local parish church and the Knights of Columbus to use golf as a vehicle to help meet the many needs in South Walton County. The members of Saint Rita’s Church of Freeport and their local Knights of Columbus (St. Joseph the Workman Council 17689) recently created the Golf Knights of Columbus charity event in an effort to partner with the community in providing mission support to three local organizations delivering compassion and care services to those throughout the area who need it. Tom Snipes, the event chairperson, likes to speak of the charities as “mission partners,” highlighting the true nature of the relationship, people from different aspects of South Walton working together for the common good of meeting the needs of others. The first annual Golf Knights of Columbus event is slated for April 27, with play and other exciting activities to be held at The Links at Sandestin. Resgistration opens at 8 a.m. and shotgun start is at 10 a.m. Mr. Snipes could not be happier with the way the event is coming together, enthusiastically stating, “I’m elated, over the moon actually,” further relating how pleased he is with the event’s reception to date from community partners and players already involved. Adding to that, many community sponsorships and contributions have been provided by local families and businesses as partners helping to ensure greater success for both the event and, ultimately, the mission partners. Mission partners include the Point Washington... Read More

Spring Fishing in South Walton

By Cali Hlavac As the vibrant colors of spring emerge, fishermen and families flock to our piece of paradise in the 30A/South Walton area for a spring fishing adventure. With the warming temperatures and inviting waters, springtime in South Walton offers anglers an unparalleled experience filled with a variety of species and thrilling catches. One of the most appealing aspects of spring fishing in our area is the weather. During this time of the year, temperatures range from the comfortable mid-60s to the mid-80s, creating an ideal environment for both fish and anglers alike. Spring brings the arrival of various species to the waters off the Emerald Coast, presenting anglers with a plethora of opportunities. Among the prized catches during this season are Cobia, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead and Mahi-Mahi. These species thrive in the Gulf of Mexico’s nutrient-rich waters, making them abundant targets for eager fishermen. To reel in these coveted catches, anglers employ a variety of tried-and-tested techniques tailored to each species. For red snapper, bottom fishing near natural reefs, wrecks and ledges proves highly effective. Using live bait such as cigar minnows, pinfish or squid can entice these elusive creatures to bite. King mackerel and Spanish mackerel, known for their speed and agility, are commonly targeted using trolling techniques. Anglers troll various lures and baits behind boats at different depths, mimicking the movement of baitfish to attract these predatory species. Mahi-mahi, with their vibrant colors and acrobatic displays, are often encountered near floating debris, weed lines,... Read More
