Alaqua Animal Refuge announces a new holiday event, “Christmas in the Courtyard,” to be held Saturday, December 10 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the organization’s new home. The event is open to the public and the entire family is welcome to participate in the festivities that will take place at the Jumonville Family Welcome Center located at 155 Dugas Way, Freeport, FL. The centerpiece of the afternoon’s activities is a special Holiday Wreath Auction, where guests can bid on over 16 creatively decorated wreaths from local businesses and artists with proceeds benefiting Alaqua’s lifesaving work of rescue, rehabilitation, and finding new homes for animals of all types. The wreaths will be displayed in the charming setting of Alaqua’s New Orleans-inspired courtyard. Each wreath is uniquely full of “merriment.” Some wreaths also have accompanying gift certificates, beautiful ornaments, and other festive items that will go to the highest bidder. There are activities for everyone including a Children’s Ornament Decoration Station, photos with Santa and his Elves, a very fun four-legged Parade of Animals, and visits with some of Alaqua’s current residents in the Cat Cabins and the new Dog Adoption Center. A group of locals has come together to help Chef Brannon Janca, owner of Down Island Gulf Seafood Restaurant in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. The holiday fundraiser, called Janca’s Jingle Bell Jamboree, will be held at Down Island on December 17, 2022 from 6-9PM and will include live music, a wine walkabout, local area chef demos, a large silent auction, a professional photo booth, and so much more. Brannon worked at Stinky’s Fish Camp for years alongside his partner and mentor, Jim Richard, but it was always his dream to open up his own spot. In 2017, he sold his part of Stinky’s and started the process of building his dream restaurant, Down Island. Halfway through renovations, however, Brannon got diagnosed with lung cancer. He didn’t want this to stop him, so he kept working on Down Island while fighting this health battle behind the scenes. By the grace of God, and just before Down Island opened, Brannon reached clinical remission. Everything was going well until recently his treatment stopped working and the cancer became active again. He has recently started chemotherapy while still cooking and operating the restaurant as much as he can.
