HOLMES COUNTY — Officials have confirmed a pilot is dead after a Wednesday afternoon plane crash in a field near the Tri-County Airport north of Bonifay.

Emergency responders with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies were dispatched to the scene just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, where the plane remained on fire and crews continued to battle the blaze.

Witnesses on scene said the plane “wasn’t running right” and that the pilot had been taking the aircraft for a test flight. Law enforcement officials said the pilot died, and it is not believed any other passengers were on board.

Identification of the victim is pending a medical examiner’s report, and the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
