A Crestview man is hospitalized in critical condition after crashing his vehicle into the back of a construction truck on Interstate 10 early Thursday morning.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, 26-year-old Harris McDonnel was driving a 2016 GMC Sierra pickup east on I-10 at the time of the 3:03 a.m. crash at mile marker 7.

FHP reported that McDonnel drove the pickup in the right through lane which was closed for construction. The impact attenuator truck for the construction crew was eastbound in the left through lane.

The attenuator truck, a 2009 Freightliner M21, attempted to merge into the closed construction lane. The pickup, traveling at a high rate of speed, collided with the rear of the Freightliner.

McDonnel was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where he remained listed in critical condition Friday morning.
