SCHOOL SCOOPS: Rocky Bayou edges Collegiate in tourney

Rocky Bayou Christian Academy’s academic team — undefeated during the regular season — took on Collegiate High School — which suffered one regular-season loss — in the Okaloosa Schools/Cox Communications Academic Tournament.

Match 12 gave Collegiate a must-win in the double elimination round, defeating Rocky Bayout 200-140.

Match 13 saw Rocky Bayou bounce back to claim the championship, 215-185.

Rocky Bayou Capt. Elijah Suh helped engineer the win with teammates Devon Lewis, Josh Barkman, Caroline Seeling and Gideon Riches, under coaches Dr. Mike Mosley and Julie Mosley.

Collegiate Coach De Cook once again brought her team to a championship round, fielding Capt. Gabe Seabrook, Eric Fowler, Collin McGovern and Jackson Freeman.

Academic Tournament coordinator Carol Bernich served as time and scorekeeper.

“Thanks go to Hilary Brown and the student TV crew at WBGI/Choctawhatchee High School for their assistance in the production and taping of the matches,” Bernich said.

Tucker Handley was the moderator, and Mathew Bell served as chief judge. General Dynamics and Micro Systems sponosored the tournament.

Two teachers represented the Okaloosa County School District in the recent Ride 2 Recovery Project Hero Bike Tour.

June Robbins of Eglin Elementary School and Cindy Jannazo of Lewis School biked the 66-mile segment from Panama City to Fort Walton Beach segment — with most of the ride in rain.

Eglin Elementary School welcomes its new student resource officer, Staff Sgt. Thomas Dobbs.

Dobbs has implemented a Junior Deputy of the Day program, with a student assisting him with arrival time safety measures.

Liza Jackson Preparatory School seventh-grader Rachel Allen earned semifinalist eligibility to compete in the 2018 Florida National Geographic State Bee, with the next level contest held at Jacksonville University on April 6.

Rachel is the daughter of Dean and Lisa Allen.

Dog-Harmony, a dog rescue and education organization in Santa Rosa Beach, has scheduled a spring break Kids and Canines Camp for ages 5-12 on March 22. For information, visit www.dog-harmony.org.

Funds raised from the camp fess go toward the renovation of the nonprofit’s new building.
