DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — Walton County is asking the community to help its 4-H youths by donating supplies for the children to distribute rescue packs to those in need.
The Walton County 4-H and five other counties in the 4-H’s district will gather April 21 at the Washington County Agricultural Center in Chipley for the 30th anniversary of Global Youth Services Day, according to a press release from the county. There, the youths will assemble as many rescue packs as possible during the District Showcase.
Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, and the only one that celebrates contributions youths make each year, the press release said. The event is celebrated in more than 100 countries to address the world’s most critical issues and help change their communities. Schools, youth organizations, nonprofits, community and faith-based groups, national service programs, government agencies and adult mentors participate.
Examples of unopened and unused items that can be donated are coffee, bottled water, applesauce, Vienna sausage in pop-top can, single-packaged nuts and trail mix, peanut butter/cheese crackers and foil tuna packs (not requiring a can opener), breakfast bars, cereal bars, granola bars and protein bars. Also, combs, shampoo, conditioner, dental floss, breath strips, mouthwash, deodorant, face towels, hand lotion, lip balm, soap, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair bands, mints, sunscreen, plastic utensils, insect repellent, small first aid kit, gallon-size Ziploc bags and very small travel-size sewing kits.
Donations can be dropped off at the Walton County Extension Office. For more information, call (850) 892-8172.
