Am I a good candidate for a Chemical Peel?
By Kathy Lamb and Rebecca Mayeux
Chemical peels have been around for quite a long time. There are many types of chemical peels and many benefits! Let’s take a step back and look at what exactly is a chemical peel. A chemical peel is comprised of an acid solution being applied to the skin on face, neck and chest that causes it to exfoliate and peel off. The new skin revealed underneath will have an improved tone and texture, improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels are an easy low cost solution to achieve a more even, brighter complexion with little to no downtime, (depending on peel depth.)
There are three types of peels available today:
- Superficial Peel – Mild acids (such as Lactic, Salicylic, Kojic) are applied to the skin to penetrate only the outer layer of the skin. This provides a gentle exfoliation without causing much flaking or peeling. A series is recommended for the maximum benefit.
- Moderate Peel – Generally Glycolic acids and/or low percentage TCA (tricholoracetic acid) acids are applied to skin to provide a more aggressive exfoliation. This is great for anyone who wants to improve age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Some flaking and peeling will occur around day 3-7 after the
peel is applied. A series is recommended for maximum benefit.
- Deep Peel – Higher percentage of Glycolic Acids and/or TCA (tricholoracetic acid) is applied to the skin to deeply penetrate the middle layer of the skin to remove damaged skin cells. Improvement in overall tone and texture, reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improved pigmentation is expected. Generally one deep peel is needed to achieve great results.
Your provider will consult with you to determine which peel is best suited to your goals and what blend of acids will provide the most benefit.
Who is NOT a good candidate for a chemical peel?
- Anyone who is nursing or pregnant.
- Anyone who has used Accutane in the last six months.
- Anyone who has used Retin A or bleaching or skin lightening agents within 48 hours prior to the peel.
- Anyone who has Eczema or Dermatitis or open cystic acne or skin infections.
Overall, anyone wanting to improve their skin tone and texture, improve fine lines and wrinkles and/or pigmentation is a good candidate. Winter months are a preferable treatment time as sun exposure is limited. Now is a great time to get a series of peels and get your skin off to a great New Year!
