Trees on the Coast, a local environmental nonprofit, recently hosted a Tree Planting Party on Saturday, April 20th in Grayton Beach along Hotz Avenue, and donated 25 Sand Live Oaks to the community. Approximately 40 local volunteers attended, hand dug and planted all the trees. Trees on the Coast provided a short educational program outlining the proper way to plant a tree, and the volunteers enjoyed comradery, live music and donuts.
The event marked the third “Tree Planting Party” that Trees on the Coast has hosted in the past two months in South Walton. Other recent plantings were held at One Seagrove Place on 30A and the Historic Gulf Cemetery on Hwy. 393. In all, 67 Sand Live Oaks were donated to the community during these three events.
Volunteers and locals were given the opportunity to “Plant a Tree to Honor a Loved One.” 32 people donated a tree to honor someone. Each will receive a granite plaque with the inscription of their choice placed by their honor tree. These living memorial trees will provide beauty, prevent storm-water runoff, enhance property values, provide shade and habitat for wildlife, decrease utility bills and make Walton County a better place to live, work and play.
Trees on the Coast Executive Director, Allen French was ecstatic with the turnout of the local community, donors and volunteers that helped make these tree planting projects possible. He stated, “the nonprofit gives individuals a chance to make a difference in their community by donating trees to be planted in public locations, usually along local, public roadways.” Trees on the Coast is a local 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit founded in 2015. Its core goals are planting, conservation and education. To date, the nonprofit has donated and planted 507 trees in Walton and Okaloosa Counties and provided educational programs and tree plantings at local schools.
