BUD & ALLEY’S WATERFRONT RESTAURANT MARKS 35TH ANNIVERSARY

Bud & Alley’s Waterfront Restaurant on Scenic Highway 30A in Seaside, Florida,—famous for its sunset celebration toasts—marks its 35th anniversary in 2021. Soon, Bud & Alley’s foodie fans can lift a glass at the daily sunset celebration toast on a newly renovated Roof Deck. “With care and consideration for the past and to honor the original building Bud & Alley’s remain largely the same, save some minor interior restoration. Thankfully, architect Dhiru Thadani was up to the delicate challenge of marrying the old and the new,” founder/owner Dave Rauschkolb says. The resulting design is a perfect match. A new entrance plaza flanks Bud & Alley’s to the east and west with a tree-lined walkway to the north. With 850 additional square-feet, the rooftop deck affords both a stunning Gulf view and a panoramic view of Seaside’s Central Square. A new full-service bar fronts 30A, a stunning three-story tower entrance to the roof deck is now equipped with an elevator, and 10 restrooms have been added. A gleaming hand-crafted wood bar rail leads guests from the back-deck area to the beach via a beautiful beach boardwalk. Bud & Alley’s daily sunset celebration was enhanced, too. “The new tower is poignant,” Rauschkolb says, “Finally, there’s a proper place to house the vintage sunset bell we’ve had all these years.” Still, the tradition remains the same. If you guess the exact time the sun sets, you are treated to a complimentary cocktail and get the honor of sounding the bell. “I am so... Read More

ECCAC monthly focus on prevention/awareness programs

ECCAC monthly focus on prevention/awareness programs

…November is National Family Caregivers Month The Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Centers (ECCAC) in Okaloosa and Walton Counties have instituted monthly prevention and awareness programs to help the children and families they serve. Foster parent caregivers are critically important to the safety, well-being and mental health of children. They take in children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment, or neglect. There are 400,000 children in foster care in the United States. There will also be a focus on kinship caregivers during November. These are grandparents and family members, or other non-relative adults who have a bond with the child in need of care. When a child is able to stay with people they know, it can help to maintain their sense of belonging. Kinship caregivers give children the chance to continue family traditions even when their biological parents aren’t able to be there. Jasie Landeros heads up the prevention/awareness department as ECCAC’s Outreach Program Manager. She commented, “While fostering or care giving for a child can be challenging, it can also be very rewarding. They have the ability to make a huge positive impact in the success of a child’s life. As well, we want to say a very special thank you to each and every one of our agency partners, and those who work tirelessly to ensure the kids in our communities are safe and healthy.” If interested in being a foster parent, visit the Department of Children and Families website at www.myflfamilies.com or... Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation Donates $1.2 Million to 16 Northwest Florida Children’s Charities

Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF), recognized as the fifth largest charity wine auction in the U.S. by Wine Spectator, is pleased to announce the donation of $1.2 million to 16 children’s charities in Northwest Florida following its first virtual auction on August 22. Each charity was awarded their funding in a private check presentation ceremony, adapted to fit social distancing guidelines. “In a year when we were not even sure we would be able to host our auction, all of us associated with DCWAF are profoundly grateful to present these needed funds to our charity partners,” said Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation President John Russell. “It is their collective mission to help children in need that motivated all of us to find a pathway to success.” This year’s auction, which was forced to transition to a virtual format due to COVID-19, marks 15 years of charitable giving for DCWAF. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over $22 million to its partner charities, all serving the critical needs of children locally in Northwest Florida. While the amount donated is less than previous years, it is an outstanding success for DCWAF’s partner organizations in a time when almost all fundraising events have been cancelled or postponed. The 2020 recipients of Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation funds include: AMIkids Emerald Coast received $80,000 to fund a GED program for at risk students between the ages of 16 – 24. Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast received $83,000 to fund Pediatric and Family... Read More

Huckabees join lawsuit over beach’s closure

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife Janet are among 15 parties in a federal lawsuit claiming they can’t use their “backyards” because of a county government’s order to close Santa Rosa Beach fronting their Gulf Coast mansion. Walton County joined other county governments in Florida in closing sections of beaches along the Gulf and the Atlantic coasts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus after Gov. Ron DeSantis refused to issue statewide orders. Filed in federal district court in Pensacola, the lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction against the county’s ordinance. The case has been set for a hearing by telephone at 9:30 a.m. Monday before U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson. Huckabee, who served as Arkansas’ governor from 1996 to 2007, was a candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2008 and 2016. He also is a former host of a talk show on Fox News. Not long after moving to Florida in 2010, the Huckabees bought the Santa Rosa property for $800,000 and built a $2.2 million, 11,188-square-foot home in 2011, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has reported, citing county permits. The beachfront property is between Santa Rosa Beach and Grayton Beach State Park, east of Destin, Fla. Huckabee and some of his neighbors have been in property-rights fights over the past couple of years to restrict public access to the beaches fronting their property. Walton County passed the ordinance last week as a public-health emergency, but the Huckabees and their neighbors primarily contend the issue is an unconstitutional... Read More

Santa Rosa County coronavirus patient dies

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Health has announced updates regarding the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Florida. Two people have died, including a patient from Santa Rosa County, and two new presumptive positive cases have been identified in Broward County. Who died from COVID-19? A previously announced COVID-19 patient in Santa Rosa County has died, after an international trip. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday morning that an elderly man with a history of international travel and pre-existing health conditions was being tested for COVID-19. Baptist Hospital officials confirmed later that the hospital was treating the patient identified by the governor. Local health departments have released no information about where the infected individual has been and who he may have been in contact with, citing patient privacy regulations. The departments have, however, indicated they are in the process of tracking down those contacts. Baptist Health Care CEO Mark Faulkner said his team is focused purely on treating the virus, and that Baptist patients, visitors and employees are not at risk. Read More
