Grant for Paxton Health Clinic is on its way [PREMIUM]

By RUBY KEARCE The Paxton City Council met Tuesday, June 21 at Paxton City Hall. The meeting started by electing a separate cemetery board. The cemetery board will have their own meeting within 30 days. Latilda Hughes – Neel then approached the board to discuss Grit and Grace, a stage-play drama depicting the life of Paxton native Bobby Kemp, as told by Bobby Charles and Brendan Roberta. The show is nearing completion, and it will be the second in a lineup of 11 stories about Walton County History. Hughes- Neel, with permission from Charles, read an excerpt from the play: “Mama and Daddy were a team. Mama went to city council meetings with Daddy. If he got overly excited about something, all she had to do was say ‘Bobby.’ And at home when she calmed him down, she would just quietly say ‘Bobby I’ve heard all I want to hear’ and if he’d kept on she would say ‘Bobby I said I have heard all I want to hear.’” The Council was invited to the performance of Grit and Grace. Patrick O’Neal, developer of the future Black Lake RV Park, then approached the board regarding utilities for the park. The project is projected to have 35 spaces and needs sewer services in order to move forward. O’Neal is asking the board for a letter of availability and a time frame in order to know if the project will need to be done in multiple phases or if it can be... Read More

Commissioners continue to dispute “audit” report findings

DISCUSSION RECENTLY RETURNED to the April 5 report issued by the Walton County Clerk of Courts containing findings of violations by members of the Walton County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) involving purchasing card use and travel-related expenses, with the commissioners continuing to dispute those findings. By DOTTY NIST Approximately 687 pages of documentation, including several letters, have been assembled and made publicly available, aimed at countering the findings of the Walton County Clerk of Courts Internal Audit Department 40-page April 5 report that had been prompted by an anonymous statement to the clerk’s Fraud, Waste & Abuse Hotline. The documentation and letters, the latter all dated Aug. 10 and addressed to Walton County Clerk of Courts Alex Alford, were included as part of the agenda for the Aug. 23 Walton County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) regular meeting at the South Walton Annex, and there was related discussion at the meeting. The clerk’s office report had come to light in early July shortly after being made available to the public for the first time. Among other findings, the report had concluded that Walton County commissioners had violated county policy and state law in connection with travel-related spending and with their use of county purchasing cards, also known as p-cards or Walton County credit cards. A copy of the report had been furnished to the Office of State Attorney, First Judicial Circuit of Florida, and that office had sent a copy to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for... ECCAC receives $60K donation from St. Joe Community Foundation

The Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center (ECCAC) received a $60,000 donation from the St. Joe Community Foundation to help with their Child Safety Matters/Teen Safety Matters initiatives in schools and mental health services provided at the Pierce Family Center.  The Center’s staff teach children safety rules, choices and strategies for recognizing and responding to safe vs. unsafe situations and all forms of child abuse and exploitation as well as the dangers of social media and bullying. Mental health counselors provide therapy at no cost, giving children the tools and resources to restore childhoods often lost to abuse. Julie Porterfield, CEO of ECCAC added, “We so value the partnership with St. Joe Community Foundation. Their generous gifts allow us to ensure children receive therapy needed to overcome the trauma of abuse. Their investment in our prevention programs help empower children to protect themselves in a world where sometimes parents can no longer.” “We are grateful for the extraordinary services Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center provides, and we’re very happy to continue our support of their mission in Walton County,” commented April Wilkes, St. Joe Community Foundation’s Executive Director. In 2021 alone, the St. Joe Community Foundation, a private 501(c)3 foundation, provided more than $44 million in grants to improve the quality of life in the communities it serves.  The Foundation provides charitable grants toward the civic infrastructure of communities in Northwest Florida with a focus, but not a limitation, on Bay and Walton Counties. Their efforts help build healthy, caring, long-lived... Read More
