The lack of active programs for the growing 50+ population in South Walton was the driver for the formation of the Coastal Seniors of South Walton in 2015. Four years later, the need for these active programs continues to increase as the South Walton senior population continues to grow every day.

Celebrating their fourth anniversary, CSSW is growing tremendously. Coastal Seniors is now an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with 130+ members and seven people on their board of directors. Thanks to District 5 Commissioner Tony Anderson, an office, meeting space and a resource library is located at 70 Logan Lane in Santa Rosa Beach, where every third Tuesdays, monthly presentations include lunch. Presentations in 2019 have included healthy eating in the New Year, protecting skin for life, horticulture, meet Sheriff Michael Adkinson, and sea turtle conservation. February’s presentation was a food and wine pairing luncheon at Cantina Laredo, and a member appreciation event is scheduled in October at Eden Gardens.

Recently-added new activities include art classes, basket weaving, local community walking tours, pottery and pickleball. The art and basket weaving classes are supported by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County; the pottery classes are instructed by Debby Orr of Santa Rosa Pottery; pickleball is scheduled in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast; and a monthly movie is shown at the South Walton Coastal Branch Library. The CSSW is very grateful for the support from these organizations.

Active senior programs encourage older adults to avoid isolation by using their skills, developing their potential and continuing their involvement in the community. The CSSW Board of Directors continues to research locations in South Walton which can accommodate daily indoor and outdoor activities.

Persons 50+ who reside in Walton County are eligible to join this dynamic group. 2019 annual membership dues are $15 per person or $25 per couple. Non-profit organizations and businesses can join for $35 and $50, respectively, and receive advertising on the CSSW website. Join at www.coastalseniorsofsouthwalton.org, and like us on Facebook.
